Krill oil in the diet of US Army Rangers

Medical University of South Carolina Aker Biomarine Antarctic AS 2018. Participants and methods: 286 physically trained army officers that are starting 5 month long intensive training program IBOLC.

IBOLC (Infantry Basic Officer Leader Coarse) include 62 days of physical exercising, which are considered one of the hardest in the armed forces. During this coarse junior officers study and practice small unit tactics in different harsh conditions. Sometimes this training purposefully includes calorie restrictions, sleep deprivation, intense physical exertion, rough terrain, bad weather conditions, incomplete information and restriction of resources. This coarse teaches basic infantry skill set, including marksmanship, machine gun shooting, tactics, planning, critical thinking development and fast decision making during stressful situations.

Objective: to determine whether krill oil supplements can improve cognitive processes which lie at the base of the key elements of troop productivity and can cause noticeable effect efficiency and psychological well being in conditions of extreme psychophysical stress, related to officer training.

Conclusions: It is apparent that consumption of krill oil by army officers has benefits in general, however, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids carry a significant importance in optimizing emotional condition, cognitive function and psychological wellbeing for a broader public.

Omega-3 fatty acids, particularly EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and (docosahexaenoic acid) DHA, concentrated inside nervous tissue and required for nerve function, normal development of nervous system, neurotransmitters and neuronal immune functions. In general, Omega-3 consumption is required for productive and healthy life.
